DEPARTMENT ROLE

The Vice President of Human Resources role combines hands-on operational responsibilities with strategic leadership, requiring a candidate who can effectively balance day-to-day HR functions with a long-term strategic vision for the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI’s) human resources management.

NYSCI has approximately 85 full time staff and 120 hourly staff. The Vice President of Human Resources directly oversees all aspects of human resources management, organizational administrative issues, staff space inventory as well as provides direct executive leadership oversight to the Facilities, and Security responsibility areas. Acts as primary advisor to the CEO and the Executive leadership. This position reports directly to the CEO.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • HR Operations:
  • Manage and oversee all aspects of HR operations, including payroll processing, benefits administration, and time and attendance tracking using ADP and other relevant systems.
  • Ensure the accuracy and efficiency of HR processes, collaborating with the team to address any issues promptly.
  • Onboarding and Offboarding:
  • Develop and implement comprehensive onboarding and offboarding processes to enhance the employee experience.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and provide ongoing support for new and departing employees.
  • Strategy and Planning:
  • Contribute to the development and execution of HR strategies that align with the organization's mission, goals, and overall strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to integrate HR initiatives into the broader organizational strategy.
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking and the ability to align HR initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Union and Employee Relations:
  • Act as the primary point of contact for union-related matters, fostering positive relations and ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Address and resolve employee relations issues, promoting a positive and collaborative workplace culture.
  • Training and Development:
  • Implement training programs for HR staff and line managers on HR processes, policies, and compliance.
  • Support professional development initiatives to enhance the skills of the HR team.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless communication and coordination between HR and other departments.
  • Communicate HR strategies, policies, and updates to all staff members effectively.
  • Coordinate and collaborate activities with the Controller as required.
  • Diversity Equity and Inclusion:
  • As a collaborative leader, actively partners with the Vice President for Museum Culture to develop and implement strategies that promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within the organization.
  • This partnership includes fostering a workplace culture that aligns with the museum’s values, promoting diversity at all levels.
  • Ensure that DEI initiatives are seamlessly integrated into human resources practices for the holistic betterment of our workforce and the museum community.
  • Facilities Management:
  • Oversee facilities and space allocation to ensure an efficient and conducive work environment.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to address space-related needs and contribute to the development of facility-related policies.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages the human resources team and provides direct strategic oversight for facilities and security groups.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Recent five to ten years of progressively responsible leadership roles in the human capital field.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in HR operations, including ADP, time and attendance systems, onboarding, and facilities management, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, and management experience
  • Strong understanding of union relations and experience working within a unionized environment.

  • Proven hands-on operational experience with a focus on efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships at all levels.
COMPENSATION

Commensurate with education, skills and experience; salary range is $140,000-$170,000 per annum.
