DEPARTMENT ROLE

The Education Services team supports NYSCI’s mission by developing and implementing a vast array of innovative educational programs for Pre-K-12th grade students, educators and families. Our programs invite learners to actively engage in the exploration of STEM concepts and practices. The department cultivates many local and national partnerships, including colleges and universities; collaborates on research projects; develops STEM learning resources; and leads educational initiatives with our community to increase science awareness, excitement and interest in learners of all ages.

FUNCTION

The Science Programs Assistant is responsible for the development and implementation of onsite and offsite educational programs for students, families and teachers including group workshops, outreaches, after school programs and other education programs as assigned. This individual will collaborate regularly with a team of Science Instructors and Science Program Assistant(s) to create and deliver innovative programs and maintain the standards and quality of lessons delivered to our various audiences.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Teach and facilitate onsite and offsite programs for families, teachers and students on a STEM variety of topics.
  2. Design and develop age appropriate lessons or activities that aligns with institutional philosophy, STEM standards, or grant project goals.
  3. Lead and carry out all operational and logistical duties associated with program delivery including planning meetings, communication notices, materials set-up/take-down, program debriefing, etc.
  4. Collaborate with other NYSCI staff to meet all outcomes and deliverables associated with programs or projects.
  5. Assist in the coordination and participation of large scale and small-scale events including student showcases, project culminating events, Family Days and Big Science Days.
  6. Perform administrative duties related to assigned programs including recruitment, registration, statistics, phone calls, etc.
  7. Assist in maintenance of labs, storage areas, materials acquisition, and inventory.
  8. Perform additional duties to assist other Education Services programs as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science or a related field or a High School diploma (or equivalent) with 3 years of undergraduate student experience in education, science or related field.
  • Ability to physically lift or move materials or equipment during storage maintenance or supply deliveries.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
  • 2-3 years of demonstrated experience with teaching hands-on STEM with diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in communicating and teaching STEM focused lesson
  • Demonstrated record of reliability in attendance, program delivery and scheduling
  • Must be available to work evenings or weekends as needed and willing to travel offsite for programs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2 years of previous Associate position in Education Services program experience
  • Driver’s License and ability to drive within the 5 boroughs
COMPENSATION

Commensurate with education, skills and experience; salary range is $42,000 annual salary and an excellent NYSCI benefits package.
