DEPARTMENT ROLE

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Omnichannel Retail Manager to join our team at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI). As the Omnichannel Retail Manager, you will be responsible for procuring unique, ownable products, leading the expansion of our brick-and-mortar shop to an online platform, and re-imagining the cafe dining experience. Your role will be pivotal in enhancing the overall visitor experience and driving revenue growth through innovative retail strategies. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in retail management, a passion for customer service, and a creative mindset.

FUNCTION

The Omnichannel Retail Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of NYSCI’s retail (onsite and online) and food and beverage operations, maintaining a high level of customer service and promoting the welfare of the organization.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Procurement of Unique Ownable Products:

  • Identify and source unique and innovative products that align with NYSCI's mission and target audience.
  • Build and maintain relationships with vendors, artisans, and manufacturers to ensure a diverse and appealing product assortment.
  • Monitor market trends and industry developments to stay ahead of customer preferences and demands.

Omnichannel Strategy:

  • Lead the expansion of the brick-and-mortar shop into an online platform, ensuring a seamless and consistent customer experience across all channels.
  • Develop and implement an omnichannel retail strategy that integrates the physical store, online store, and mobile platforms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT and Marketing, to optimize the online shopping experience, order fulfillment, and inventory management.
E-commerce Operations:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the online store, including product listings, pricing, promotions, and inventory management.
  • Monitor website performance and user experience, identifying areas for improvement and implementing enhancements.
  • Analyze sales data, customer feedback, and web analytics to drive data-informed decision-making and improve conversion rates.
  • Research, investigate, and recommend a new POS system that integrates onsite and online sales, inventory management, and reporting.

Re-imagining Cafe Dining Experience:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive plan to enhance the cafe dining experience, focusing on menu innovation, customer satisfaction, and revenue growth.
  • Collaborate with culinary experts and vendors to curate a menu that offers healthy and sustainable food options.
  • Implement strategies to improve customer engagement and loyalty, such as loyalty programs, special events, and partnerships.
  • Manage day-to-day relationship with onsite cafe/vendor management team.

Evening/Weekends

  • Ability and willingness to participate in events outside the workday schedule.
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Train and supervise sales associates, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures, and that outgoing information is current and accurate.
  • Ensure associates have the information, materials, and supplies needed to carry out their assigned tasks successfully.
  • Ensure registers are opened and closed according to procedure and reconciled with petty cash and deposited at the end of each workday.
  • Ensure monetary transactions executed by associates are handled accurately and in accordance with NYSCI policy.
  • Ensure all associates present themselves in a professional, friendly, service-oriented demeanor.
  • Maintain staff schedules, ensuring full coverage of operational staffing needs.
  • Deploy staff to various operational posts daily, ensure that staff are supported in their work assignments, and coordinate lunch coverage for staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in daily operations meetings with associate staff, and convey relevant daily operational information including: expected attendance, modified operational procedures, staff assignments, and more.
  • Ensure food service providers uphold NYSCI’s standards for professionalism and visitor experiences, stay informed about the goings-on of the science center, and provide seamless service to NYSCI’s visitors.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Retail Management, or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
  • Proven experience (3+ years) in retail management, preferably in an omnichannel or e-commerce environment.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
  • Strong understanding of retail operations, including procurement, inventory management, pricing strategies, and customer service.
  • Demonstrated success in driving online sales and optimizing the customer experience across various digital platforms.
  • Creative mindset with a passion for innovation and staying up-to-date with industry trends and best practices.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to leverage data to drive decision-making.
  • Strong leadership abilities with experience in managing and developing a team.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, vendors, and customers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A science center, natural history museum, or children’s museum background is preferred but not required.
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish, Mandarin) are a plus.
COMPENSATION

Commensurate with education, skills and experience; salary range is $60,000 – $65,000.
