NYSCI’s Evening of Science and Inspiration was a wonderful celebration of our exhibits, our research, and especially the young people we serve. Our 2017 gala provided an opportunity to celebrate and share our work, and to raise crucial unrestricted funds to support our ability to engage and inspire young people through Design-Make-Play.

About the Position

On November 19, 2017, NYSCI hosted the first of four clinics where staff from the Girl Scouts of Greater New York and supporting coaches/parents from specific troops, worked with a cohort of young Girl Scouts to further their preparation to address the challenges set forth by the FIRST LEGO League.

FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, and energy, and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology, then compete on a table-top playing field.

Each challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Project, and the Core Values. Teams of up to ten children, with at least two adult coaches, participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all guided by the FIRST LEGO League Core Values. Teams may then attend an official tournament, hosted by FIRST LEGO League Partners.

For the opening session at NYSCI, the challenge was themed HYDRO DYNAMICS. The Girl Scout team had to learn all about water—how we find, transport, use, or dispose of it. As part of The Robot Game, Girl Scouts reviewed the interface of the EV3 (Lego Mindstorm’s programming brick) online software, programmed their EV3 to accomplish a series of these challenges involving water, and explored different types of sensors.

About the Position

On August 3, more than 20 high school students participated in a workshop about climate change that was held at NYSCI. Students explored the carbon footprints of their food and transportation choices, alternative energy sources, water runoff and more, all through hands-on activities.

The workshop is part of the Climate & Urban Systems Partnership (CUSP), a multi-city initiative that is working to improve the public’s understanding of climate change. The initiative focuses on helping urban residents identify local, city-specific climate impacts and solutions. In addition to New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. are also involved in CUSP.

The CUSP resources used by the students at the August workshop, are available to the general public and can be used free of charge. Resources include the CUSP map, a crowd-sourced map that helps users visualize the impacts of climate change on city living, and CUSP educational kits for kids, families and educators that focus on climate change and STEM learning.

About the Position

Our Explainers are heading off to college!

This year, 21 NYSCI Explainers graduated from high school. As part of the Science Career Ladder (SCL) – the signature program of the Alan J. Friedman Center for the Development of Young Scientists – our Explainers explain NYSCI’s STEM-focused exhibits to visitors, perform science demonstrations, and assist with educational workshops and camps. After graduation, our team continues to provide support by letting them know that they always have a home here at NYSCI as they embark on their college journey!

At our last High School to College Workshop, we were privileged to have Dr. Darren Ferguson, Manager of Special Programs at LaGuardia Community College, as the guest speaker. Dr. Ferguson spoke about the first year experience and gave our Explainers a sense of what to expect when they go away in the fall.

We are proud to announce that this year’s class will be attending college at CUNY’s Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), City College, Hunter College, LaGuardia Community College and Queens College; SUNY’s Buffalo, New Paltz and Stony Brook; as well as Loyola Maryland, MIT, NYIT, Ohio State, St John’s, Union College, University of Buffalo and Yale. Thirteen of the students have already declared that they will pursue STEM majors, including in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, physical therapy and pre-med.

About the Position

This workshop gets three thumbs up, literally! Learn about the art of molding and casting while you make exact replicas of your most important digit, your thumb. Then turn those plaster thumbs into thumb thumb tacks, and experiment with hot glue casting as well.

Recommended for ages 6 and older.
