Design Make Play Innovation Camps are designed to explore concepts in science, technology, engineering, and math, build problem-solving and communication skills and inspire innovators. Each camp includes interactive activities, exhibit exploration, a student certificate of completion and a free 6-month student membership.

Day Camps

Tasty Science

Grades 1 – 2

February 20, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Become a food scientist as you explore chemistry concepts in your favorite foods. Create the best combination of ingredients that enhance the flavors of a favorite dish. Investigate the phases of matter as you prepare an ice cold treat and experiment with natural polymers in a popular jiggly snack.

Creative Circuitry

Grades 3 – 5

February 21, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Learn the principles of electricity with various hands-on activities. Play with static electricity in hair-raising experiments. Create your own light up sculptures with play-dough and LEDs. Experiment with circuits as you design your own light and sound greeting cards.

Fee: $85 per participant, $75 per member

Wearable Technology

Grades 3 – 5

February 22, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Explore electricity and circuitry by tinkering with copper tape, LEDs, and conductive thread. Create light-up bracelets and beanies with Gemma microcontrollers and LEDs that blink or display fun messages.

Fee: $100 per participant, $90 per member

Weeklong Camps

Wearable Technology

Grades 5 – 6

April 2 – 6, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Take a deeper dive into the world of wearable technology. Learn how to solder and connect wires on a circuit board by making an LED accessory. Dissect electronic components of recycled toys to see how they work. Learn how to sew circuits into fabric to make your accessories light up and make sounds.

Fee: $425 per participant, $400 per member

Dissection Lab

Grades 3 – 4

April 2 – 6, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Explore amazing facts about the human body as you dissect a different organism each day. Conduct gross and fun experiments to learn how blood circulates, how food is digested, and how our senses work. Sheep’s brain and cow’s eye dissections included.

Fee: $400 per participant, $375 per member

Sense-ational Science

Kindergarten

July 16 – 20, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Explore how our five senses work together to tell us about the world around us. Experiment with hands-on materials that you can touch, smell, taste, hear and see, and discover how some animals sense differently than we do.

Airplay

Grades 1 – 2

July 23 – 27 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Experiment with the properties of air and air pressure in various hands-on activities to find the answer. Explore how certain animals and plants have adapted to moving in the air by closely examining a bird’s wing and seeds that are dispersed by wind. Design and create gliders, bottle rockets, and helium blimps to take home as you explore how air influences man-made flying contraptions.

Ecology Engineers

Grades 3 – 4

July 30 – August 3, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Learn about the different types of ecosystems found on our planet as you explore their characteristics and design your own ecosystem. Discover more about our local ecosystem in Flushing Meadows Corona Park and investigate the organisms that have evolved unique adaptations for survival. Design a portable garden and explore green spaces in urban settings while tackling environmental issues such as flooding and heat waves.

August 6 – 10, 2018; 9 am – 3 pm

Go behind the scenes to learn the science behind your favorite films. Explore sound effects, transform your appearance with movie magic makeup and create your own digital video using visual effects.
