Meet the Roommates – theatrical set pieces that depict two large fictional creatures based on the real-life symbiotic relationship of the goby fish and pistol shrimp. This temporary, site-specific art installation created by scenic artist Shana Siegel will live on NYSCI’s roof to introduce the trade of scenic art to museum visitors.
The Roommates can be best viewed through the windows in the Walter O. Lecroy Gallery, located on the Upper Level.
This installation has been made possible by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
Meet Shana Siegel during the opening weekend of Roommates!
Shana Siegel Graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2004. Since then, she has been working as a theatrical scenic artist on theatrical productions, film and television alongside cultivating her fine art practice. Shana gravitated towards the trade of scenic art because it involves constant experimentation with new materials and techniques. She applies this wealth of technical knowledge to her fine art practice and is interested in triggering curiosity in the viewer about how things are made. Shana was an artist in residence at the Wassaic Project in 2013 and at the Brooklyn Arts Space in 2016. She has participated in a myriad of salon shows and has painted several public murals around New York City. Shana works and lives in Brooklyn.
