Loading Events

Families bend, twist, light, sculpt and animate a new version of the holiday season with workshops, demos, artist installations and more.

ReMake the Holidays is a response to increased consumption and waste during the holiday season and an attempt to give people inspiration and options to do things differently, while having fun.

Activities are free with NYSCI admission, unless otherwise noted. Activities take place between noon and 4 pm.

 

Daily Activities

Ice Sculpting by Bill Bywater
December 27 – 30, 2015; noon – 3 pm
Ice sculptor Bill Bywater will sculpt a different extinct animal each day of the festival. We encourage you to consider the impact of climate change, human waste and consumption on our environment and on some of our favorite animals. Free with NYSCI admission.
Sunday, December 27: Pyrenean Ibex (extinct 2000)
Monday, December 28: Western Black Rhino (extinct 2011)
Tuesday, December 29: Spix’s Macaw (no known wild specimens since 2000)
Wednesday, December 30: Javan Tiger (extinct 1979)

December 27 – Textiles

Rogue Making with Tenaya Hurst
December 27, 2015; noon & 2:30 pm
Make wearable, washable circuits in this one-hour workshop and learn about electrical engineering and how to add LEDs to clothing for safety, fashion and fun! Recommended for ages 8 and older. $25 materials fee. Advance registration recommended.

Collaging with Skraptacular – Skraps of Fabric
December 27, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Under the guidance of staff from Skraptacular, learn to sculpt and paint with fabric to turn scraps into art. Free with NYSCI admission.

Sew Fun! with Little Makers
December 27, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Explore real tools and materials while practicing sewing,weaving and playing with textiles. Free with NYSCI admission.

Lil Buddies with Maker Space
December 27, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Learn how to hand sew by making a Lil Buddy, the perfect friend (or gift for a friend!) for the holidays. Free with NYSCI admission.

December 28 – Metal and Glass

Learn to Solder Wire Sculptures with Maker Space
December 28, 2015; noon, 1:30 pm & 3 pm
Learn how to solder while creating beautiful wire sculptures in this one-hour workshop. Recommended for ages 7 and older. Free with NYSCI admission.

Skraptacular Sea Glass Charms
December 28, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Under the guidance of staff from Skraptacular, turn something you find on the beach into a piece of jewelry. Free with NYSCI admission.

Glass is to Metal as Conductors are to Insulators! with Teknikio
December 28, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Under the guidance of staff from Teknikio, explore conductors and insulators and use their special properties to build circuits that blink and beep. Small materials fee required.

Recycled Glass Magnets
December 28, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Sculpt with marble and recycled glass tiles to create new magnets from old remnants. Free with NYSCI admission.

December 29 – Paper

Origami and Kirigami with Huy Voun Lee
December 29, 2015; noon, 12:45 pm, 1:30 pm, 2:15 pm & 3 pm
Learn the art of paper folding and cutting, while making a variety of artful creatures and bookmarks with recycled paper in this 30-minute workshop. Recommended for ages 6 and older. Limited capacity. Limit of two tickets per family or group. Free with NYSCI admission.

Recycled Racer with Scrapkins
December 29, 2015; noon – 4 pm
It’s race time! Under the guidance of staff from Scrapkins, invent your own custom cruiser using a juice carton, straws and cardboard. Then, attach a rubber band and launch! Free with NYSCI admission.

Skraptacular Pin and Bead Making with Paper
December 29, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Staff from Skraptacular show you how to make a fun wearable with recycled paper. Free with NYSCI admission

Project Paper-Making with Little Makers
December 29, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Discover the fun of paper-making! Transform recycled paper scraps and found objects such as fabric fibers into your own handmade paper. Free with NYSCI admission.

Paper Lanterns with Maker Space
December 29, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Celebrate this holiday season by making a beautiful paper lantern to light up your winter nights. Free with NYSCI admission.

December 30 – Plastic

Plastic Jug Masks with Scrapkins
December 30, 2015; noon – 4 pm
With help from Scrapkins, discover the versatility of plastic jugs as you use plastic to make masks and headpieces. Free with NYSCI admission.

Skraptacular with Plastic Bottle Caps
December 30, 2015; noon – 4pm
Discover what creative projects can be made with your plastic bottle caps with Skraptacular. Free with NYSCI admission.

Thermoplastic Casting with Maker Space
December 30, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Use everyone’s favorite thermoplastic (hot glue!) to create unique glowing objects that can be used as night lights, ornaments or even jewelry. Free with NYSCI admission.

DIY Self-Watering Planters
December 30, 2015; noon – 4 pm
Bring your own recycled plastic bottles to make a cool project that will have your plants do the work for you! We recommend that you bring 12-24 oz. bottles. We have planting supplies (not bottles!) for one recycled bottle project for each participant.  Free with NYSCI admission.
