Make It: Luminescent Night Lights

Loading Events

Learn about LEDs, resistors, sensors and microcontrollers, and solder them to a PCB board designed by NYSCI staffer Reid Bingham. The Luminescent Night Light automatically turns on when the lights turn off and then fades through all the colors of the rainbow. This class will guide you through the process of learning how to solder this beginner’s electronics kit, and discuss the potential of microcontrollers, sensors and programming. Recommended for ages 10 and older. $10 per adult/child pair, plus NYSCI admission. (Members: $8 per adult/child pair.) Register on the day of the event at the NYSCI admissions area. If you have any questions about Makerspace programming, email Reid at

Win Prizes and Free Workshops!
Join our first Make It At Home Challenge! After you have created your Luminescent Night Light, we challenge you to design and make a custom enclosure for it. What do you want your enclosure to look like? What materials do you have around the house that captures the color changing light of your circuit? Check out some examples on our Make It At Home Challenge! page for some inspiration.

To participate, take a photo or video of your night light, send it to us via email ( or Instagram (@NYSCI #makeitathome), or bring it in to show us. We will feature all the entries on the Maker Space blog and showcase them on the big screen TV at the entrance to Maker Space. At the end of the month, Maker Space staff will vote on the following categories: Most Resourceful, Most Professional and Most Outlandish. The winners of each category will win prizes such as Learning to Solder kits and free Maker Space workshops. Check the competition page for more information.
