40 students from Corona, Queens attended an innovative new after-school program, Creative Computing Academy, to learn digital skills and explore computer science in a fun and creative informal learning environment. The program served two cohorts of 3rd and 4th grade students attending NYSCI’s free after-school program, Science Ambassadors. Creative Computing Academy aims to provide early exposure to computational thinking to elementary school students; enable students and caregivers to become empowered learning partners; and improve perceptions of computer science and careers.
Google’s grant of $100,000 supported the development and implementation of this new program to help bridge the computer science education gap by igniting student interest in computer science and supporting young people from immigrant communities, particularly among Latinx students and families. The program served a total of 250 students and families through the after-school club, digital learning workshops for both children and caregivers, and a Community Student Showcase that celebrated student projects and achievements.
