Students from Corona, Queens participated this week in the Corona Design Squad: Astronomy Engineers camp, a free, three-day camp for kids in grades 3 – 5. The students designed devices to make space travel easier and learned about astronomy concepts.
The design-based astronomy lessons used in the camp were prepared by high school students who are part of the ExpandEd Options Teen Program. The teens also helped teach the lessons to the camp kids.
ExpandEd Options is a credit-bearing apprenticeship that trains high school students to be effective and highly qualified content specialists. The NYSCI apprenticeship focuses on science communication and STEM content. The Corona Design Squad camp comprises a large part of overall grades for the high schoolers in the program.
