Security Guard

Background: Since its founding at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) has inspired millions of people—children, teachers, families– by offering creative, participatory ways to learn and encouraging people to explore their curiosity and nurture their creativity. Located in Queens, the most ethnically diverse county in the country, NYSCI welcomes 500,000 visitors each year and serves thousands more through outreach in schools, teacher professional development and participation in a variety of events, Research & Design initiatives.

Department Role: Manage NYSCI’s security functions, including crowd control, physical security and safety of employees, visitors, facilities, and assets.

Function:  Provide support to Security department daily operations.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Assigned to fixed or mobile security post inside or outside the museum.
  • Assists in visitor traffic and crowd control.
  • Monitor premises to prevent theft, violence, or infractions of rules.
  • Assist visitors by providing directions, answering questions.
  • Responds to calls for assistance.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications: Must possess a current NYS Security Guard License.  High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Knowledge:  

  • Commitment to the philosophy and mission of NY Hall of Science.
  • Able to work in a variety of weather conditions, to be outdoors, and to stand for long periods.
  • Able to carry 25 pounds.
  • Superior communication and customer service skills.
  • Computer literacy a plus.
  • Experience working at a visitor destination, especially in security or serving visitors a plus.

 Customer Service:

  • Ability to communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public and other external sources, in person, in writing or by telephone.
  • Ability to actively listen to what others are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, ask questions as appropriate and not interrupt at inappropriate times.
  • Ability to provide information to supervisors, co-workers and represent the organization to customers, the public and other external sources, in person, in writing or by telephone.
  • Comfortable working in an environment with groups of children.
  • Experience serving diverse audiences of children.
  • Demonstrable experience in working as a member of a team.
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to express ideas clearly in oral communications.
  • A science center, natural history museum, or children’s museum background is preferred but not required.

 Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum two years experience in security field.
  • Ability and willingness to participate in events outside the workday schedule.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.

 Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalency is required
  • Security Guard License
