Design-Make-Play Innovation Camp

Turn your child’s boring days off from school into an exciting educational adventure by signing them up for any of our fun-filled day or week-long camps. Design Make Play Innovation Camps are designed to explore concepts in science, technology, engineering and math, build problem solving and communication skills and inspire the next generation of innovators. Each camp includes interactive activities, exhibit exploration, a student certificate of completion and a free 6-month student membership.

Please note: No refunds will be granted for absenteeism. All campers are required to attend their registered camp dates. No exceptions will be made for vacation travels. Please plan accordingly.

 

Day Camps 

App Design 101

February 20, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm

Participants will learn the fundamentals of app design using a free open source online tool, MIT App Inventor to remix an existing app and then use their own creativity to design their own apps. They will also learn about useful applications for this tool from product design and animation to medicine.

Fee: $85 per participant, $75 per member

Computing Creations

February 21, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm

Students will learn the basics of coding and how to use a free online resource called Scratch to create your own digital games. Incorporating strategies for problem solving, systematic reasoning and creative collaboration, they will build interactive stories, animations and games. Using this foundation, students can continue to create at home.

Fee: $85 per participant, $75 per member

Game Design 101

February 22, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm

Participants will dive into the basics of game design by prototyping, play testing and designing their own games using Gamestar Mechanic, a free online tool that introduces computer programming through video game design. Students will also learn the five elements that each game should have so that they can continue designing analog or digital games at home.

Fee: $85 per participant, $75 per member

Fraction Mash

December 30, 2016, 9 am – 3 pm
Students will explore their artistic potential while learning about mathematical concepts involving fractions to design quirky and complex photo mashups. Utilizing NYSCI’s free Fraction Mash app, students will recognize fractions in the world around them and create digital pixel masterpieces that playfully engages them in understanding math concepts.

Design Your World

February 23, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
Participants can see the world through the eyes of an engineer as they solve various design based challenges. They’ll explore gravity, air pressure and material properties while designing devices that will be launched from 20 feet in the air! They’ll also redesign and drop relief packages into disaster struck areas, build, test and launch rockets, and create a rover.

Engineer it!

February 24, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
Students will investigate various physics concepts while completing design-based challenges that will spark their imaginations. They’ll also explore speed and momentum as they build their own rollercoasters and they’ll experiment with potential and kinetic energy to design catapults and balloon-powered cars. Participants will learn the design engineering process and how they can design, build and test objects like an engineer.

Fee: $85 per participant, $75 per member

Animation

April 10 and 11, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
Participants will learn how to create stop motion animation clips. They’ll also learn the process of storyboarding and how to design their own paper puppet characters and backdrops which will be used in their animation. Students will also have the opportunity to take their animation clips home to share with their friends and family!

Size Wise

April 13, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
How do movies like The Lord of the Rings make some characters look very tall, while other characters seem to be “hobbit-sized”? In this camp, students will use mathematical concepts like ratios and proportions to explore how trick photography can make special effects come to life. Using NYSCI’s Size Wise app, students will have the opportunity to take on the role of director and create their own special effect digital scenes.

Week Camps

Science of Sports 101

July 17 – 21, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
Students will investigate the scientific principles behind their favorite sports. They’ll examine the secrets of protective gear by deconstructing various sports equipment, analyze the physical components of balls, and experiment with balance and muscle memory to help them perform at their best when playing various sports. Students will exercise their brain and body with game play featuring soccer, volleyball and kickball.

Fee: $400 per participant, $375 per member

Science of Sports 102

July 24 – 28, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
Participants will explore angles and lines as they play mini golf and design their own mini golf hole to challenge their teammates. They’ll also investigate the forces acting upon a ball when it flies through the air and learn the best techniques for throwing a football, baseball and Frisbee to overcome those forces. Game play for this camp will feature ultimate Frisbee, flag football and softball. This camp is appropriate for both new and returning students from Science of Sports 101.

Fee: $400 per participant, $375 per member

Robotics

July 31 – August 4, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
Grades 5 – 6
August 7 – 11, 2017, 9 am – 3 pm
Students will learn engineering basics and how to design, construct and program using creativity, logic and problem solving skills. Through a series of fun challenges, students will work in teams to command their robot to move, react and make sounds using motors and sensors. On the last day of camp, students will have the opportunity to showcase their programming skills in a robotics challenge.

Fee: $400 per participant, $375 per member
