A mid morning snack and lunch will be provided.

Get ready to get messy as you explore the amazing properties of matter. Learn the differences between liquids, solids and gases by making edible treats including ice cream, experimenting with slime, and exploring weird substances. Investigate density and mass by designing and testing various objects that float and sink. The Messy Matter School’s Out Innovation Camp includes interactive activities, exhibit exploration, a student certificate, and a free student membership.

The camp’s itinerary includes:

February 17 – Polymers
What is an atom?  How do atoms form molecules? Students will investigate atoms that we encounter in our everyday lives and build their own edible atoms and molecules.

February 18 – Phases of Matter
What are the phases of matter? Why does water turn to ice when you put it in the freezer? Students will investigate how molecules of a substance are affected by changes in temperature. Students will also conduct a yummy phases of matter experiment to create ice cream.

February 19 – Visible Effects of the Invisible
There are invisible forces that play an important role in our everyday lives. Is there a way we can control these forces? Students will experiment with gases and air pressure and create airzookas designed to manipulate the forces of matter to move objects around a room.

February 20 – Amazing Reactions
Create amazing (safe) reactions using everyday household materials. Experiment with acid and base reactions that create bubbles and color changes. Students will create their own fizzy reaction tablet from soap, citric acid and baking soda.

February 21 – Fluorescent Matter
Have you ever wondered why some things glow in the dark? What happens to atoms and molecules that glow in the dark when they are exposed to UV light? Students will create glowing slime and make their own glowing jewelry that detects UV light from the sun’s rays.
