Pumpkin chucking, live bats, and bioluminescence projects are all part of the fun at NYSCI’s two-weekend celebration of Halloween and the Day of the Dead. Some activities require an additional fee; see details below.

October 25 & 26 Dead or Alive Activities
Pumpkin Chucking
1 & 3 pm
Watch our catapult, Chuck, toss pumpkins in the air. Free with NYSCI admission.

November 1 Dead or Alive Activities

Dead or Alive Bioluminescence
3 – 6 pm
Join us for light and Day of the Dead-inspired activities in Design Lab and learn how and when different organisms produce light. Free with NYSCI admission.

Bioluminescence activities include:
Inflatable Jellyfish – Learn about jellyfish that are bioluminescent and make your own that floats in the air and lights with LEDs.
Glow-it-Yourself in the Tree House with Sibel Deren Guler – Did you know there are organisms that can glow and react to light in the deep sea? Learn about these processes and create your own object or secret message that reacts to heat and light with special ink and dyes.
LED Orbz in Maker Space – Produce your own form of light.
Spooky Happy City – The circuit-based activity, Happy City, gets haunted.
Shadow Puppets – Use florescent paper and light to craft shadow puppet animals that are known for their bioluminescence.
Day of the Dead Cider and Hot Chocolate – Learn about and add traditional Oaxacan spices to your beverage to make a new festive treat.

November 2 Dead or Alive Activities
Live Bat Encounters
1 & 3 pm
Meet live bats and learn about the benefits of bats, why we need to conserve them, and what you can do to help them at this special show with Rob Mies from the Organization for Bat Conservation. $6 adults, $5 children, students & seniors, plus NYSCI admission. (NYSCI members: $3 per person.) Limited capacity. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the show.
