Noon, 1 & 2 pm
Help track cicadas! After spending 17 years underground, baby cicadas or nymphs will emerge this year when the ground temperature reaches a steady 64 F. Build your own “cicada detector” that measures the temperature of the soil at your home. You’ll monitor the temperature of the ground and share your findings on the WNYC Cicada Tracker. With help from the friendly folks at Radiolab and WNYC, you’ll learn all about cicadas (Magicicada Brood II), and how to build your detector and be a citizen scientist.
Recommended for children ages 10 and older. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The one-hour workshop is free with NYSCI admission. Space is limited. Preregistration is required.
