Scenes at New York Hall of Science in Queens, New York

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1964 – 65 World’s Fair at NYSCI. Learn about the different technologies and advancements made in the past 50 years on land, in space, and in the water. Hands-on activities, guest partner groups and documentaries will be part of the fun during these day-long events. Free with NYSCI admission.

50 Year of Exploration and Innovation will be held on the following days from noon – 4 pm:

July 12, 2014: Space: Innovation + Exploration
August 9, 2014: Water: Innovation + Exploration

 

Activities

Solar Viewing
View the Sun through filtered telescopes with members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York.

Sun Prints
Experiment and make your own sun prints on UV sensitive paper.

Rocket Making
Make your own Rocket with Maker Space.

Space Cartoons
Screenings of educational shorts related to space travel and exploration from the 1920s in 16mm film. Program curated by Thomas Stathes.

BioBus
Travel into worlds smaller than the eye can see aboard the BioBus, the world’s only state-of-the-art microscope facility housed on a solar-powered 1974 transit bus.

 

Workshops

Magic solar materials with Invent-abling.
Did you know that some dyes change color in the sun, and other dyes are only visible in Ultraviolet light? We will be exploring heat and light reactive materials and making mini spy books that only you will know how to open and read!
Spy book Kits: $7
Sessions: 12 pm, 12:45 pm, 1:30 pm, 2:15 pm, 3 pm.

 

Demonstrations

AirPlay Demonstration: 2:30 pm
Join us as we use air pressure to keep a balloon inflated without tying a knot and crush a water cooler bottle.

Flight Demonstration: 12:30 & 3:30 pm
Come learn about what makes hot air balloons, blimps, airplanes and rockets defy the laws of gravity.
